Norman Cabana of Spencer is president of the Massasoit Art Guild and one of the founding members. He has pursued his love of art from an early age. After finishing school, Mr. Cabana entered a Franciscan monastery, where he developed a strong bond with nature and art.

He has taken numerous classes at the Worcester Art Museum and, before his retirement, worked in the Art Department of the Telegram & Gazette. Mr. Cabana now runs an antiques and art gallery on Mechanic Street. He paints mostly in acrylics, but recently has branched off into pastels. He considers his art to be a journey of self-discovery that is constantly evolving. Many of Mr. Cabana's works are in private collections throughout Massachusetts.

Edward Heske, a Sturbridge resident, is an artist with more than 45 years of experience. He has won many awards for Best of Show, Awards of Excellence, and Honorable Mention in art shows. He also was showcased as “Artist of the Month” at an agency in Boston. Mr. Heske was a designer, illustrator and art director for many major companies in Connecticut and Massachusetts. He then formed his own advertising agency, which he ran for 10 years. Turning his attention full-time to oil painting, he has completed more than 150 works of art. State Rep. George N. Peterson Jr., R-Grafton, said Friday that Federal Emergency Management Agency officials had yet to officially recognize the state as a disaster area. If that designation is made, a toll-free number will be established for affected residents to apply to FEMA for aid.

Mr. Peterson said Gov. Mitt Romney is considering using leftover funds that were earmarked for Hurricane Katrina evacuees for flood damage across the state. Mr. Peterson said there is between $10 million and $15 million left over; he was waiting to hear Friday how much of that would be available for aid locally.

Also on Thursday, the Massachusetts congressional delegation asked FEMA to act immediately to declare the state a disaster area, and to step up sending aid to help communities recover from an estimated $11 million in flood damage.

State and federal officials were quick to respond in the days after the flood to assess the damage, Town Manager Michael J. Couglin, but he said he was disappointed that the attention to the local damage seemed to dwindle last week.
