Even a rain-soaked South Sound Stadium couldn't slow down Timberline's Bobby Barnes. Barn... Barnes, Blazers sink White River..

Barnes caught four passes for 140 yards, including a 37-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Mike Jones midway through the fourth quarter, in the Blazers' 16-6 nonleague victory against visiting White River on Thursday.

Barnes opened a four-play, 61-yard scoring drive with a 20-yard reverse. Two plays later, he caught what appeared to be a simple 5-yard curl, but turned it into a game-breaking play.

A spin followed by a lightning-quick juke left a trio of White River defenders on the turf, allowing Barnes to scamper the remaining 32 yards untouched into the end zone, giving Timberline a 16-6 lead with 8 minutes, 43 seconds remaining.

"We made plenty of mistakes out there tonight," Timberline coach Kevin Young said. "But overall the kids played hard and we made the big plays when we needed to."

"He's just been getting better every game," Young said. "I'm not sure he's thrown the ball better than he did tonight; having Bobby on the receiving end helps."

Timberline, which wrapped up its third consecutive Pacific 9 League championship last weekend, closed the regular season with seven straight wins.

The Blazers, who improved to 8-1 and will play host to the loser of tonight's Greater Saint Helens League matchup between Columbia River and Kelso in a state preliminary game next week, have won 25 of their past 27 regular-season games.

Timberline's defense tightened soon after, sacking Gran four times and holding the White River quarterback to minus-19 yards on 10 carries over the next three quarters.

"The defense did an exceptional job bottling Gran up after the first quarter," Young said. "We challenged them after that first touchdown and they certainly responded."

Timberline closed the first half with a 4-yard touchdown run by Undray Bailey and a 27-yard field goal by Kramer Cross to take a 9-6 halftime lead.

Mekonnen Anebo led the Timberline ground attack with 56 yards on 10 carries. Bailey added 50 yards on nine carries, while Anthony Le rushed eight times for 31 yards.

Federal Way 26, Decatur 14: Federal Way's Victor Williams ran for 261 yards, and the Eagles spotted the rival Gators a 14-0 lead in the second quarter before rallying for the South Puget Sound League South victory at Memorial Stadium.

Williams, a senior, galloped for a pair of second-half scores as the Eagles pulled away from a 14-14 tie at halftime. He ran 46 yards for a third-quarter touchdown, then went 25 yards for an insurance score in the fourth.

Kentwood 49, Kentridge 12: Derek Hartwigsen ran for three touchdowns on carries of 5, 6 and 14 yards as the Conquerors raised their record to 7-2.

Graham Kapowsin 24, Auburn Mountainview 14: Austin Burton carried 14 times for 166 yards and a touchdown as Graham Kapowsin won for the second time this season in the matchup of first-year programs.
