At least 40 athletics departments, including some of the biggest in the country, are considering establishing life-insurance policies on their boosters to help defray the rising cost of college sports, two companies with knowledge of the plans told The Chronicle on Monday.
The institutions -- which include two each from Atlantic Coast Conference, the Big 12 Conference, and the Southeastern Conference, as well as four from the Pac-10 -- got the idea from Oklahoma State University, which announced last month that it had secured $280-million for its athletics program by establishing $10-million life-insurance policies on 28 of its athletics boosters (The Chronicle, March 2).
