Quality Luxury Imports BMWs, Lexus, Mercedes only at Coast to Coast Associated Press WINCHESTER, Ind. — A funeral director was sentenced to home detention and community service after acknowledging he forged two signatures on insurance documents.
Russell Reichard, 49, pleaded guilty to fraud Monday in Randolph Superior Court and was sentenced to 30 days on electronic home detention and 12 months on probation. He also was ordered to complete 120 hours of community service.Judge Peter Haviza reduced the charge from a felony to a misdemeanor.
Reichard was charged in December 2005 after prosecutors said he forged two signatures on a $250 life insurance policy for a deceased woman, designating his funeral home, rather than her two sons, as beneficiary, police said.
Mary Hummel had left the policy and another valued at $5,000 in Reichard's possession to pay for her funeral. But she died without designating the funeral home as the beneficiary, and one of her sons — who was the beneficiary — had preceded her in death.
Twenty-two people from Randolph County and neighboring Darke County, Ohio, wrote letters to the court on behalf of Reichard. Five spoke in court.
