Also on Thursday, Bob Lotane resigned as OIR communications director over alleged use of his office computer to promote the fundraiser for his wife, Robin Lotane.

A story in The Tallahassee Democrat on Thursday said McCarty was host for the fundraiser on Wednesday night at the privately run Governors Club in Tallahassee.

That story explained an electronic version of an event invitation sent to an invitee indicated it was created on a state Department of Financial Services computer in a potential violation of state laws that prohibit use of state resources for political campaigns.

George Grawe, Allstate Floridian Insurance general counsel, and other insurance lobbyists were among invitees, the story added. The story did not identify those insurance industry officials.

"She is interested in learning more about the situation," Sink spokeswoman Tara Klimek said when the South Florida Business Journal asked if the CFO will recommend the resignation of other OIR officials, perhaps including McCarty.

The four-member Florida Cabinet appoints and has authority to dismiss the insurance commissioner. The other Cabinet members are Gov. Charlie Crist, Attorney General Bill McCollum and Commissioner of Agriculture and Consumer Services Charles Bronson.
